Better ways with water
We have good news for business costs and for water saving too.
You can cut down everyday water use by 20-30% by taking a few simple steps*.
High meter reads or bigger bills
More often than not we find that higher meter reads than normal, or bigger bills, are because of leaking pipework. And leaks aren’t always as obvious as you might think. A damaged pipe can slowly leak water that seeps away without you noticing. Follow our simple leak check to make sure you’re not wasting water and money without realising.
Send in regular meter reads
Taking and sending us monthly meter reads helps you to be more aware of how much water you’re using and gets you thinking about where you can use less. We’ll also use your meter reads to calculate your bills, so we have to estimate less.
It’s easy to send in your meter reads in MyAccount.
Please only take meter readings if it’s safe to though.
Do a water audit
A water audit will typically result in water saving of 5% - 8%, but we sometimes see up to 20% or more.
Knowing how much water you’re using and where you’re using it helps to spot where you can be more efficient by using and wasting less.
We have a guide to help you carry out your own audit at your premises.
Fit simple water saving devices
- Tap aerators are low cost little adaptors you fit onto your existing taps, which can reduce the tap water usage by 50%.
-
Upgrade toilets to dual flush, or an air gap flush, which waits until the cistern is empty before starting the refill.
- Urinal controls keep water use down to the necessary minimum.
These are just three simple devices that can make a difference. You can find more of our recommendations right here.
More tips
Look after leaks and drips. A tap dripping one drip every second wastes over 11,300 liters a year!
That’s money straight down the drain. And it’s much more common than you think.
Checking water using fixtures and equipment is an easy way to avoid wasted water and costs. If you mainly use water for tea and toilets, or your water use is similar to how you use water at home, we have some more useful guidance on ways to save.
*Depends on the size and age of your site, property and water fixtures and fittings.
In 2022, we helped organisations to save £2.9m worth of water that would have otherwise been wasted.
