Understanding Wholesaler price changes in England for 2025/2026

Here's what you need to know and how we can help you manage costs

Every year the water wholesale companies (who supply clean water and takeaway wastewater) update their charges, with new prices coming into effect from 1 April.

Ofwat approves the prices they set and ensures they are in line with the Ofwat published price controls. Ofwat is the water industry regulator.

Wholesale price increases

You may have also seen stories in the press about the forthcoming price changes. As expected, they are more significant than in recent years, so we want to share them with you.

We recognise these changes are coming when many businesses are already facing increased cost pressures, so we’ll do everything we can to minimise their impact.

Ofwat have said, that over the next 5 years, there will be an average increase of 42% on wholesale prices. It is likely (from what we have seen and heard) this will be front loaded, so more increases at the start and increases tailing off at the end of the period.

Where you can find more information

A lot of material has been published about the price increases you can read the headline summary in Ofwat's press release.

The key points relevant to you are:

  • Ofwat estimates that wholesale charges will on average increase by around 42% before inflation between 2025 and 2030;
  • The increases are all about increasing investment in the water sector including new infrastructure projects, projects to alleviate water scarcity issues and to reduce waste water spill/overflow;
  • Companies will also be financially incentivised to reduce overall non-household water consumption which should be helped through a significant programme roll out of smart meters.

When will I know what my final charges are?

The water wholesalers will soon publish their final price in their scheme of charges documents. We’ll make these available on our website as soon as we have them so you can check the prices relevant for your site.

From April 1, you will see the new prices on your bill.

Can I shop around to get a cheaper price?

Your wholesale charges are the same whichever water retailer you are with. It’s only the retail fee element of your bill that can differ. So, switching to another water retailer won’t get you better wholesale prices.

If you're not on a contract, it's worth filling in our quote form and we'll get back to you.

While we can’t change your wholesale prices, we can make sure you’re on the best retail fee.

How can we help you

What makes your water charges

Wholesale charges for clean water and wastewater make up most of your bill.

The wholesaler charges us for your water and wastewater and we pass this on to you at cost in your bill.

Our retail fee is a small part of your bill and covers our costs of billing, meter reads and other account services.
